#RELcats & Religious Artifacts

In Fall 2014, I developed a series of assignments that asked students to identify religious artifacts around them. The purpose of the assignment was to demonstrate to students that the study of religion relates to life outside the classroom and can be applied in everyday life. Students snapped a picture of a religious objects and then shared their pictures on social media. In class, we discussed the objects we found and identified themes in what we saw–and what we didn’t see at all. This led to an extended conversation about the role of culture in shaping what we know–and don’t know–about religions around the world.
